Results of the 2025 Ice Hockey World Championship (Sweden-Denmark)

The 2025 IIHF World Championship has ended in Stockholm. For the first time since 1933, the U.S. national team won the tournament. Switzerland won silver for the fourth time in 12 years.

By winning the finals 0-1 in overtime, the U.S. team became the world champion for the first time in 92 years. In 1960, the Americans also won the world championship, but then it was held as part of the Olympic Games.

Interestingly, for the first time in the history of the Ice Hockey World Championships, the final match ended in overtime with a score of 1:0. Previously, such a score was at the 1998 tournament, but then the Swedes beat the Finns by scoring a goal in the third period.

As for the current final, the U.S. team's players outscored their opponents (40:25) and should have opened the scoring in regular time, but Leonardo Genoni's game was largely to blame for the fact that this did not happen. The 37-year-old goalkeeper played seven matches at this World Cup, conceding seven goals and making four shutouts. That's why Genoni was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The Americans still managed to score the winning goal in the third minute of overtime.

The game started very nervously: it took time for both teams to start attacking the opponent's goal. It took the Americans more than three minutes, and the Swiss six. The Europeans, taking advantage of the majority, tested the strength of Jeremy Swayman. But the representatives of North America still loaded the opponents' goalkeeper more.

The finalists began the second period even more cautiously. The action came to life when Michael Fora's shot was blocked by Frank Nazar.: he rushed forward, and the Handicap, in an effort to stop the opponent, hooked him, which led to a free throw. Conor Garland was appointed coach to execute the shootout, but Genoni read his throw, and the score remained 0-0.

The third period also did not introduce any intrigue into the nature of the match, and the teams reached overtime, in which the fate of the gold medals was decided by a throw from Teige Thompson. After passing through the blue line and gaining some space, he shot past Jenny. The best player of the tournament could not block this shot. This is his third silver medal at the World Championships.

In total, the Swiss have played in the main matches of this tournament four times in the last 12 years, and each time they have won silver. So far, they have not been able to overcome the barrier of the finals.
